Historically, it was in the public spaces of cities that citizens met one another. And while some of these public places were located in buildings, the vast network was often open to the skies: on streets, squares, parks and boulevards. The importance of public spaces is economic but there is also a social dimension to the contribution public spaces make to the city. Public spaces where different groups can meet and understand one another will create a greater civic sense, which in turn will bring about a more sustainable and resilient society based on collective responsibility. A very important component in the resilience of societies is the creation of social capital as a means of developing the feeling of collective responsibility and behaviour. And one of the most important venues for the production of social capital is the public space in cities. With that comes the ultimate reward of equality, for a good public space does not distinguish between rich and poor, young and old, male and female; it gives each citizen equal opportunity to participate in the joy of cities.
