As the wealth of nations grows, it is but natural that everyone wants to be included in this growth in prosperity. When used in the context of the term Affordable Living/ Housing, this suggests that housing accommodation of a certain basic standard is available to the large masses that in ever-greater numbers populate our cities. While Affordable Housing for All will remain a mirage as the norms of affordability and minimum housing standards keep on changing, there is a moral argument for continuing to make a united effort to keep on trying to achieve this goal. The task before us is gigantic!In the diversity of a city’s population lies its vitality and resilience. Lack of affordable housing leads to unofficial settlements and slums where poor infrastructure (water supply, sanitation and electricity), leads to a low standard of living (though not always) resulting in unsafe human habitation (in terms of crime, fire and health) and limited access to educational, medical and social amenities.
